They've been coming in the mail for a couple of weeks, but I've been ignoring them. I just quietly and quickly dispose of them with the other junk mail that shows up in my mailbox on a daily basis. My kids have seen them.

    Growing some Memories

The start of the school year is almost here, but that doesn't mean that we cannot continue to enjoy the sunshine.  Unfortunately, most of my grand ideas for activities to break up the summer monotony have been used up, and both the kids and I are looking for something different to do as a parent/child activity.

    Financially Out of Shape

As I was making my way through my run this morning, I came to the conclusion that I don't feel very financially fit either.  Our monthly payments to the Debt Management Plan are certainly getting us closer to being debt free, but it's the day-to-day, week-to-week struggle each month that is just not working very well.

Just Try...My Finances Thank me for Trying

"Just Try."  I say these words all the time to my kids.  It's a reflex reaction to statements beginning with "I can't...." and ending with "make my bed," "get my own snack," "get something off of a shelf," or one of many other countless phrases.

Comparison shopping for car repairs pays off

Cars frustrate me.  One minute you're driving this shiny new vehicle off the lot, complete with that new car smell, and the next thing you know it's got 80,000 miles and seemingly continuous repair bills.  The thing that infuriates me the most is that vehicles cost so much.  It just seems wrong that an item that costs so much requires such outlandish maintenance and repair bills.

At the movies: Staying cool and under budget

Sometimes the best answer is just to bag it and go to the movies. It's cool in there (frigid actually-- I always bring a light sweater, even in the swampiness of summer) and depending on how you play it, you can spend a whole afternoon feeling comfortable and entertained.

    Online Garage Sale

We've had garage sales in the past, and I was always delighted in how much stuff we got rid of, as well as the amount of funds we raised.  However, organizing a garage sale takes a fair amount of planning, time, and energy. Alternatively, an online garage sale is a great way to trade some of that clutter for cash.

School will be out soon. In just a few short weeks, my two kids will come home from that last day of school excited at the prospect of three months off from the daily routine of getting up, going to school, doing homework, and going to bed early. My wife, who is a pre-school teacher, will also join them in this state of euphoria known as "Summer Vacation."

We're all busy.  I'm sure you know what I mean. Spring has sprung. In the Midwest, that means some wild variation in the weather from week to week, and sometimes even day to day.  It's a time where the grass and trees turn green, and the familiar sounds of children playing outside after dinner return.  It also means that daily wardrobe choices are gradually moving, from jeans and sweatshirts, to shorts and t-shirts.
