Everyone's situation is different, but maybe you can relate to something we have experienced.

One Step at a Time Giving up something for a short time will help you get something better down the road. Our Debt Management Plan (DMP) has helped us do that. We had to temporarily give up using our credit cards to buy new or nice things, so later we could get things we needed.

After we finished our DMP we were able to buy a one-year-old car because we can afford the payments now. My wife is partly disabled and she was stuck at home because we only had one car. That made her depression and anxiety issues worse. It is so nice to finally have a vehicle less then 10 years old with under 100,000 miles. We needed something we could depend on-something that wouldn't break down and leave her stranded.

Can you give up something, cut a cost, or lower a monthly payment somehow?

We live in an old two-story home with four bedrooms, and our children have all moved out. We have a bedroom downstairs with a full bath. We made the decision to move downstairs to a smaller bedroom that is right above the heating system. We closed off two bedrooms upstairs by putting a blanket over a hall doorway and by shutting the heat to those rooms. We have already noticed a savings on our heating bill. We had to give up the larger bedroom but the rewards have been worth it.

Sometimes it will cost you temporarily to pay for something that will save you money later on.

When we graduated from our DMP, we bought a new washer and dryer. Our old washer was not spinning the clothes dry and so we had to run it for 80 minutes (the longest setting), plus an additional half hour. (Last month was our lowest electric bill).

What I am trying to say is that the steps you take today will bring you a better, more rewarding future tomorrow. Any action you take needs to take time to work until you can see the rewards of your actions. Getting out of debt just takes one step at a time
